Where to start building relationships with journalists

Where to start building relationships with journalists

You blog, update Facebook, send out press releases but no one hears you.  Shout smarter not louder!

We had an amazing summer event with the hilarious and cheeky Totes Inapproapes.  One question that came from the audience was. “How did you grow your followers to over 60,000?”  Her answer, (taking out the swearing), it was one blog about her kids not eating their dinner, so many resonated with what she was saying and it went viral.  Amazing!  She is a very talented and very funny lady, who hugely deserves this success.  Everyone needs a little bit of Totes in their lives.

So, how do you do the equivalent with your business, well you can keep plugging away with your posts and just hope you go viral, or you could work smart.

If you can’t get journalists to respond to you, you need to go to them. That means finding out which conferences, events and workshops they’re attending (many speak at/chair events too) and going along yourself.

So how do you find out which events journalists are attending? Stalk them on Twitter (in the nicest possible way of course) and/or set up a Google alert for their name. That way, you’ll be the first to know when they’re going to be speaking at a particular event.

Go and have a chat with them, even if its just to introduce yourself.  What’s the worst that can happen.  Then follow up with an email saying how nice it was to meet them last week at the whatever event.

Come along to a local ParentPreneur event and brainstorm some ideas and contact.  You just never know who are going to meet at ParentPreneur and we know you will come away raring to go and fully charged.
